Students at Minnetonka’s Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School assemble sandwiches March 5 to support the work of the “363 Days” organization, which helps provide food, specifically sandwiches, for the many homeless and hungry of Hennepin County. “363 Days” refers to the idea that people are frequently generous and donate to charity on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but often forget about the other 363 days of the year. The organization’s founder, retired teacher Alan Law, spoke to Immaculate students about the work he does, how he became involved and about the people that this project would help. After his talk, students assembled more than 2,000 sandwiches that Mr. Law would distribute to those in need. “The students had fun participating in the activity and were proud that their work would be making a difference in the lives of many people,” said Immaculate grade 5 teacher Janel Dysart. More than 50 grade 10 students from Southwest High School have begun corresponding via email with a group of UnitedHealth Group employees who donate their time and insights. The program, eMentors, was created by BestPrep, and for the past 6 years, UnitedHealth Group employees have been assigned to connect with nearly 1,600 high school students from across the Twin Cities to help them think critically about their future careers. For eight weeks, students and their mentors exchange weekly emails with a preassigned topic that includes subjects such as communication skills, workplace ethics, diversity in the workplace and the importance of financial literacy.
