MacPhail standouts
Violin students of MacPhail Center for Music teacher Katie Bast, including St. Louis Park resident Miranda VanPilsum-Johnson, were selected to perform in MacPhail’s Concerto and Aria Concert in Antonello Hall at MacPhail. From left are Ava Szychalski, Mairead Howley, Angie Vaaler and VanPilsum-Johnson as they rehearse with conductor Mischa Santora for MacPhail’s Concerto and Aria Concert. The Concerto and Aria Concert features students performing with a professional orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Mischa Santora. The concert celebrates the highest honor that a MacPhail student can achieve. Students are selected by two rounds of competitive auditions. They receive award certificates and a special reception is held in their honor. The string quartet performed Concerto Op. 3, No. 10:1 Allegro by Antonio Vivaldi. (Submitted photo)

‘Repairing the world’
Isaac Joseph, a student at the Amos and Celia Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School, and his mother, Jodi Joseph, helped make colored placemats for veterans at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center March 5 during the school’s annual VOICE night. VOICE stands for Volunteer Opportunities in Community Service Experience. Nearly 400 people showed up for the night, which highlighted a week of service activities designed to display through action “tikkun olam,” a Hebrew phrase meaning repairing the world. The students created snack bags for Minneapolis Public Schools, made fleece blankets for the Humane Society, and colored the placemats for veterans, among other activities. Students also raised money for nonprofits Kiva and Heifer International by completing household chores and neighborhood tasks. For more information, visit hmjds.org. (Submitted photo)

Walking an aisle
The Bear Den from Cub Scout Pack 738 at the Sabes Jewish Community Center spent time at Byerly’s in St. Louis Park Dec. 16 participating in their our own version of the SNAP/Food Stamp Challenge. They put themselves in the shoes of another to view what life can be like for millions of low-income Americans by shopping for a week’s worth of meals with a budget of a little over $4 per day in food. The groceries purchased totaled $31.50 and were donated to the St. Louis Park Emergency Program and other food shelves. (Photo courtesy Sabes JCC Bear Den Pack 738)
