City offices in Wayzata will close Thursday, Sept. 14, to allow staff to mourn and attend the funeral of Wayzata Police Officer William Mathews, who died Sept. 8 after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 12 in Wayzata.
City hall and public works will reopen at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15. The motor vehicle department will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15. The city-owned Wayzata Bar and Grill and Wayzata Wine and Spirits will be closed for part of the day Thursday and will reopen at 4 p.m.
Wayzata Police and Wayzata Fire Department duties will be covered by mutual aid, according to the city. In case of emergency, dial 911.
The public is welcome to attend the funeral service for Officer Mathews 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Wayzata Free Church, 705 County Road 101, Plymouth. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the church. Following the service, Mathews will be buried in Summit Park Cemetery in Wayzata.
Mathews was married and the father of a 7-year-old boy. He had been with the police department for nine years.
The “Officer Bill Mathews Memorial Fund” has been established at the Wells Fargo Bank Wayzata branch, 900 E. Wayzata Blvd.
