The public is welcome to attend a funeral service for Wayzata Police Officer William Mathews 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at Wayzata Free Church, 705 County Road 101, Plymouth. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the church. Following the service, Mathews will be buried in Summit Park Cemetery in Wayzata.
The officer died Sept. 8 after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 12 in Wayzata. Mathews, 47, of Plymouth, had pulled over his marked squad car to the side of the highway and stepped outside while responding to a 911 call at around 12:30 p.m. about debris on the highway when he was struck by a vehicle, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.
Mathews was married and the father of a 7-year-old boy. He had been with the police department for nine years.
The “Officer Bill Mathews Memorial Fund” has been established at the Wells Fargo Bank Wayzata branch, 900 E. Wayzata Blvd.
