Benilde, Park place high at Irondale Invite

Volleyball teams collectively go 6-2 at Saturday tourney

St. Louis Park and Benilde-St. Margaret’s volleyball went 3-1 and 2-1, respectively at the Irondale Knights Invitational tournament on Saturday.

Benilde improved to 7-1 on the season winning six straight matches before falling to River Falls (Wisconsin) in the championship match in New Brighton.

The Red Knights won the first set 25-21 before River Falls pulled away in the second set 25-13 and won the third set 15-8. That was the first lost set for Benilde on the season.

Benilde swept St. Paul Central, Proctor and Irondale each 2-0 to reach the final.

The Orioles captured the third place trophy with a 2-1 win over Irondale for the second win over the Knights of the week.

Park opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to River Falls (Wisconsin) before a pair of 2-0 victories over Park Center and Minneapolis Roosevelt to reach the third place game.

The two teams met in Park the Tuesday before with the Orioles defending the home floor in a 3-1 win by scores of 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.

Park opened play in the Metro west Conference with a 3-2 loss to Chaska on Thursday night also played on the Orioles home court.

Chaska winning the second set 25-16 and Park took the third set 25-22. The fourth set went to the Hawks 25-18 and they used that momentum to win the fifth set 15-10.

Park senior captain Ella Trotter had 17 kills and 15 digs while classmate and fellow captain Kim Lindgren led the team with 18 digs and five kills. Makaila Winward had a team-high 12 sets to go with seven kills and five blocking assists. Winward, Trotter, Lindgren and Maddy McIntosh each had an ace serve. McIntosh had 14 digs.

Park has three conference matches before the end of the month starting Thursday at home against Chanhassen (4-4). Tuesday, Sept. 19 the Orioles travel to Robbinsdale Cooper (4-2) before hosting Bloomington Jefferson (2-9) on Sept. 28. All matches start at 7 p.m.
