Class A State Baseball
Three Riverview League Amateur Baseball League playoff series have yielded qualifiers for the State Class A Tournament, which begins this week with games at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington.
St. Louis Park advances to state as the Riverview’s No. 1 seed after sweeping Hamel, 16-0 and 7-0, in a best two of three series last week.
The defending state champions from Minnetonka advances as the second seed from the Riverview League following a 16-0, 12-2 sweep over the Northwest Orioles.
Hopkins advances to state as the No. 3 seed from the Riverview League after blanking the Bloomington Bandits, 4-0 and 5-0, last week.
History is on the Minnetonka Millers’ side, since they have won the last two state titles, as well as 13 championships overall.
With the baseball season winding down, many area sports fans are turning their attention to high school sports.
The first prep football games of the 2017 season will be played at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31.
Opening-night matchups for the Lake Conference schools are Hopkins at Apple Valley, Minnetonka hosting Eagan, Edina hosting Lakeville South, Eden Prairie hosting Eastview and Edina hosting Rosemount.
Eden Prairie, coached by Mike Grant, is the defending West District football champion.
