St. Louis Park voters will eliminate two of four candidates for the Ward 1 council seat during a primary Tuesday, Aug. 8.
The ward’s current council representative, Sue Sanger, has opted not to run for re-election. Steve Kaplan, Margaret Rog, Brian Shekleton and Zaylore Stout filed as candidates for the seat.
The two candidates who receive the most votes in the primary will compete against each other in the general election Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The primary – St. Louis Park’s last after the council voted to eliminate primaries in city races in future years – is already open for absentee voting.
Ward 1 voters can cast their ballots in person 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 at their polling places or cast absentee votes 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at City Hall, 5005 Minnetonka Blvd. Extended hours will be available 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7.
Elections officials will check in voters using a secure e-poll book system. This is the second election cycle to use these systems in Hennepin County. The system replaces the paper check-in process.
The term for the seat is four years in length.
The current annual salary for the position is $6,977 plus a $4,495 stipend for their Economic Development Authority duties for a total of $11,472.
