Minnetonka Police Department reports multiple cases of outgoing mail theft

The Minnetonka Police Department has recently responded to multiple reports of mail theft, including checks and sensitive items. The mail targeted is outgoing mail – primarily checks – sent from the victims for various bill payments. The thieves then use the account numbers from the stolen checks to create forged checks and cash them at banks.
The Minnetonka police advise residents to take these steps when sending sensitive mail and checks: mail checks from a post office or secure blue postal service box, hand outgoing mail to a letter carrier, report all suspected mail theft and consider starting a neighborhood watch program, if one doesn’t already exist.
Residents are also advised to stay alert and continue to watch neighborhoods for suspicious vehicles and activity. Call 911 to report any suspicious activity.
