Red Knights aim for fourth state title
Benilde-St. Margaret’s returned to the state boy’s lacrosse tournament for the first time since 2011.
That year, the Red Knights won back-to-back state titles and this season marks the fourth appearance, bringing in a 14-2 record to Tuesday’s state quarterfinal match against Anoka.
The Red Knights received the No. 3 seed at state with Eagan at No. 1 and Eden Prairie at No. 2.
The contest was over before this edition went to press with he semis June 15 and finals June 17. Look for an update in the June 22 edition of the Sun Sailor.
To get back to state, Benilde received the No. 1 seed in Section 5 before oustcoring Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Blake by a combined 40-9.
In a 15-0 section-opening win over Hopkins, Jack VanOverbeke had a hat trick and three assists while Brian Arnold also had a hat trick and Quinn Ehlen had six goals.
Benilde topped Park for the second time this season by a 16-4 score on June 5. Ehlen had five goals and an assist while Eric Weber had three goals and three assists. VanOverbeke scored once and contributed four assists. Ben Scherer had two goals and two assists.
Another regular-foe, Blake, met up again in the section final as the Red Knights scored a 9-5 win after edging Blake on May 2 5-4. The section final win featured four goals from Ehlen; two goals and two assists from Arnold and Scherer and one goal from Weber. Goalie Buzz Williams made five goals to help lift the hardware on the Robbinsdale Armstrong field on June 7.
Benilde has had a diverse attack this season as seven different scorers collect at least 10 goals and five added at least 11 assists. Ehlen leads the way with 33 goals and 11 assists.
Coleman Reis is the top draw-taker with 73 draw controls on 142 attempts with Jack Rickman 44-for-66 on draws.
