Metro West champions hope tough schedule prepares them for Section 6AA success

Benilde-St. Margaret’s boys tennis is 0-2 after a 4-3 season-opener loss to Orono followed by a 6-1 loss to Section 6AA foe Edina.

Red Knights coach Kevin Rust said the tough schedule included a Tuesday match against Wayzata and Eden Prairie on April 24.

Juniors Tristan Fjelstad and Ryan Frost return to the courts after qualifying for the Class AA state doubles tournament last June. Senior captains are Max Jablonski and Dawson Spindler.

FJelstad picked up a win at second singles against Orono while the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams of also picked up team points. At No. 2 was the duo of Spindler and junior Michael Hunter and the No. 3 team of eighth-grader Nicholas Olson and Nicolas Dokman picked up the third team point.

Spindler represented the Red Knights in the section singles tournament last spring going 1-1.

Benilde won six straight matches entering section play last season and went 8-0 for the Metro West Conference title.

Traditionally, the Red Knights have been a singles-dominated lineup but doubles is ahead of last year’s progress so far.
