Imagine a job that allows you to set your own schedule and have unlimited time off. It sounds almost too good to be true, but Media Minefield, a public relations agency in Minnetonka, offers just that.
“They don’t want your job to be the only thing you are worried about. They want you to
be present with your family so the unlimited vacation really helps,” said Senior Media Coach Conny Bergerson.
The company has always had the flexible hours, unlimited vacation and unlimited sick days. Founder and CEO Kristi Piehl likes to think of it as a family first company.
Employees always have their birthdays off as well.
Another unique feature about Media Minefield is that the company encourages working mothers to bring their babies to work with them.
Bergerson is one of the employees who takes advantage of bringing her baby to work.
Bergerson recently had her second child, Jack, who is 14 weeks old. She usually brings Jack into the office three days a week.
“It’s really nice for me to be able to have this extra time with him and so the flex time has been great. If Jack is having a really bad day, I can go and work from home so it’s been really nice for our young family,” Bergerson said.
For the employees who don’t have families yet, the benefits of having flex scheduling are still tremendous.
“We have folks here who don’t have children so if their dog or cat has an appointment, they get to go to that too,” Piehl said.
Piehl started the company in 2010 with a vision of building a unique company that redefines public relations.
Piehl was an investigative reporter and news anchor before she was laid off in 2008.
“I took some time and did a lot of soul searching,” she said. “I didn’t want to work for someone else and I have always believed that media and news is the best way to get a message to an audience.”
The idea for the company came when Piehl was taking a class at her church. The class combined figuring out how to take your passion and helping people.
“I was the only employee of the company for a year, and then when the employees started to come I really wanted to have a different kind of work environment,” said Piehl.
The company has come a long way since 2010 and now has 14 employees.
“I never thought that I’d have any employees initially,” she said. “I mean I thought it would be great for me to do, and then [the first employee] started at one year in, and here we are.”
Media Minefield was named one of the 100 best companies to work for in 2015 by Minnesota Business Magazine.
“I’m passionate that we can be a different kind of company with different kind of policies and still be wildly successful,” said Piehl.
