Update: Well-known doctor, St. Anthony man dead in Orono shooting

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred in Orono on Friday night, Nov. 15.

The shooting took place outside a residence at 1005 Heritage Lane. When Orono police officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a male in the front yard who was armed with a handgun. Subsequently shots were fired and the male was pronounced dead at the scene. That individual has since been identified as Ted Hoffstrom of St. Anthony.

Upon entering the residence, officers discovered the body of a second deceased male. The victim was shot prior to police arrival, and later identified as the occupant of the home, Stephen Larson.

The men have been identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiners office as:

Stephen Lawrence Larson, MD, age 74, his home address is the house in Mound where the shootings occurred. His time of death was estimated as 8:55 p.m. Dr. Larson was a well-known OB-GYN doctor in the Twin Cities, associated with Fairview Hospitals in Edina and Burnsville. He also had served as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota.

Ted Christopher Hoffstrom, 30, of St. Anthony, the man killed by police at 9:09 p.m. Friday.

This is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The identity of the Orono police officers involved in the shooting will be released at a later date, the sheriff’s department report said.
