St. Louis Park has struggled for victories throughout the boys hockey season with an inexperienced varsity squad. Wins have been hard to come by for an Oriole team that continues to improve according to head coach Shjon Podein.
St. Louis Park enters the Section 2A playoffs with a 4-20-1 record after losing a pair of close contests last week.
However, a “new season” dawns for Park as it begins post-season play. The Orioles, a ninth seed, were scheduled to play eighth-seed Waconia in first-round action Feb. 20.
Winner of that game will advance to the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Parade Ice Garden.
Semifinal game is 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. and the championship game starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28. All tournament games are at Parade Ice Garden.
“We hope to get a playoff win,” said St. Louis Park coach Shjon Podein. “We had a lot of positive improvement throughout the season.
“Now, we must choose to play together in the playoffs. We know what it takes to win.
“This team has displayed good attitude throughout the season and developed in several areas,” added the Oriole coach.
St. Louis Park concluded its regular season with a 5-4 loss to Cooper Feb. 16. Charlie Hills scored twice for the Orioles. Danny Murray and Carlos Siguenzo also scored for Park. Jake Lukasavage was credited with two assists. Mitchell Hickerson and Frank Jermusek had one assist each.
Park’s steady senior goaltender Ryan Froom came through with 33 saves.
Minneapolis defeated St. Louis Park 6-4 Feb. 14. The Orioles led 4-3 after two periods before Minneapolis rallied to outscore the Orioles 3-1 in the final period.
Nick Owens, Lukasavage, Jake Baer and Miles Mularky scored one goal each. Assists went to Baer, Mularky and Nick Hames.
