Plymouth students win chess tournament
More than 150 chess players participated in the School Chess Association’s Frozen Open and Double Bug tournament Jan. 26 at Zachary Lane Elementary in Plymouth.
Two players from schools in Plymouth took home first-place trophies in their respective categories.
Noah Regan, from Gleason Lake Elementary in southwest Plymouth, and Niki Ringel, from Sonnesyn Elementary in western Plymouth earned the honor of Primary Co-Champion.
The next SCA tournament is Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Statewide Grade Level Championship. Competitors will play only against kids from their own grade and will play for the title of State Grade Level Champion. The tournament will be held at Capitol Hill School in St. Paul.
The School Chess Association is a 43-year-old Twin Cities organization that offers chess activities, tournaments and camps for school-aged children. Tournaments are held at various locations throughout the Twin Cities October through May.
