‘Mahalia’ comes to Old Log Theater

Opening Thursday, Feb. 14, is “Mahalia” at the Old Log Theater in Greenwood.

The musical is based on legendary gospel singer, Mahalia Jackson, and will run through May. 25.

Written and directed by Tom Stolz, the play traces the life and career of the world’s best loved gospel singer Mahalia Jackson from her birth as a grandchild of plantation slaves, up through her rise to wealth and international fame.

Though Mahalia achieved the affection and permanence given public figures known simply by their first name, little is known about her life, which was always concealed by the shadow of her enormous musical talent.

Twenty-two musical numbers of Mahalia’s biggest hits have been incorporated into the script, including “We Shall Overcome,” “Deep River” and “Precious Lord.”

The cast features Sandra Hodges, one of the Twin Cities’ most recognized gospel singers, in the title role. She is complemented both musically and dramatically by Sam Reeves, who plays all-male characters including Martin Luther King, and by Dianne E’Laine, who plays Mahalia’s accompanist and lifelong friend, Mildred Falls.
