No. 2-ranked BSM girls boost hockey record to 15-2
Benilde-St. Margaret’s girls hockey team suffered a painful loss to Minnetonka in last year’s section championship game. That defeat has been a rallying point for the 2012-13 Red Knights squad.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s is ranked second among state Class 2A teams behind No. 1 Minnetonka. However, the Red Knights defeated the Skippers 3-0 earlier this season.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s has compiled a 15-2 record under the guidance of head coach Dave Herbst. The Red Knights have a 4-0 North Suburban Conference record after defeating Totino-Grace 9-0 Jan. 8.
“We have been playing together well as a team,” said BSM coach Dave Herbst. “We lost a couple of games with two of our best players out of the lineup.
“But this team has good depth. We have three solid lines with high tier players who can wear down opposing teams.
“And our defense has also been solid. We allowed only five goals in our first 12 games of the season. Beating Minnetonka 3-0 has been one of our season’s highlights, especially since we lost to them last year in a great section title game,” said Herbst.
Junior forward Kelly Pannek scored a hat trick as the Red Knights blanked Totino-Grace last week. Brittany Wheeler, a junior forward, added two goals in a winning cause.
Other BSM scorers were Anne Arnason, Bailey Forcier, Kaylee Druk and Caitlan Reilly. Red Knight goalie Abigail Miller had a relatively easy time and needed to make only seven saves to preserve the shutout.
“Miller has been really strong in goal and is one of the top goalies in the state,” said Herbst.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s scrimmaged Shattuck-St. Mary’s late last week and earned a 4-4 tie against a team consisting of elite prep hockey players from across the country.
“Scrimmaging Shattuck’s was a good experience and I thought we had the edge outshooting them 28-15,” said coach Herbst. “It was a good measuring stick for our team.”
Benilde-St. Margaret’s will travel to Wayzata for a 2:30 p.m. game Saturday, Jan. 19. The Red Knights return home to the St. Louis Park Recreation Center to play Irondale at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22.
