BSM girls skate to Cake-Eater Classic title

Benilde-St. Margaret’s girls hockey team is off to an impressive start winning the Edina’s Cake-Eater Classic tournament. The Red Knights won twice in the tourney and improved their overall record to 4-0.

The Red Knights opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Edina Nov. 23 at Braemar Arena.

Benilde’s Kaylee Druk scored in the second period with assistance from Mekenzie Steffen and Brittany Wheeler.

Liv Halvorson added a power-play goal at 9:44 of the third period. Kelly Pannek and Wheeler picked up assists.

BSM finished scoring as Alicia Praus scored a short-handed goal at 16:20 of the final period. Sara Taffe was credited with an assist. BSM goalie Abigail Miller made 15 saves.

The Red Knights claimed the Cake-Eaters Classic title with a 7-1 win over Breck Nov. 24.

Caitlin Reilly and Pannek scored two goals each. Anne Arnason, Alexi Press and Bailey Forcier had one goal apiece. Miller tended goal and made 14 saves.

BSM defeated Shakopee 9-1 in the season opener Nov. 13.

Wheeler, Kippin Keller and Reilly scored two goals each. Druk, Forcier and Praus added one goal apiece. Goalie Miller finished with 20 saves.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s remained unbeaten by blanking Duluth 9-0 Nov. 30.

Orioles lose 4-1

St. Louis Park’s girls hockey team has a 1-3-1 record after losing 4-1 to Mahtomedi in North Suburban Conference action Nov. 27.

Sophie Noreen scored for the Orioles early in the second period to tie the score at 1-1. Anna Basill picked up an assist.

However, Mahtomedi scored later in the second period and added a goal midway in the third period to claim the victory.

St. Louis Park junior goalie Peyton Stafne made 33 saves.

St. Louis Park will play the Minneapolis Novas at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis.

The Oriole skaters battle Spring Lake Park at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Fogerty Arena.
