Looking Ahead: Tonka, Hopkins football seasons begin

The Minnetonka and Hopkins High football teams will open the 2012 season in non-conference games next week.

Minnetonka, featuring returning All-Lake Conference players Malcolm Moore and DeAndre Singleton, is set to travel to Arrowhead, Wis. For a 7 p.m. game Friday, Aug. 24.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, Hopkins will host a Texas team, Episcopal High School, at Hopkins High Stadium.

Falcons face Crimson

The Armstrong High football team will open the 2012 season against the Maple Grove Crimson at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Armstrong High Stadium.

Matt Lombardi, the former Wayzata High School defensive coordinator is beginning his second season as Maple Grove’s head coach.

Falcon VB scrimmage

Armstrong High’s girls volleyball team will test its skills in a scrimmage against Roseville at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Roseville Area High School.

Hopkins tennis opens

Hopkins High’s girls tennis team will open the 2012 season with a 10 a.m. non-conference match against St. Louis Park Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Hopkins.

Volleyball openers

Two Lake Conference teams will open the volleyball season in 7 p.m. matches Thursday, Aug. 23. Edina will travel to Orono and Minnetonka will be on its home court for a match with Bloomington Jefferson. – Compiled by John Sherman
